October is.....

October is Domestic Violence month and I decided to blog about it especially after I read Maggie's post on domestic violence. The statistics are alarming, scary and very sad.

According to the American Bar Association website
* Approximately 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the United States National (Year 2000)
According to the National Institute of Justice
* One in four women will be a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime. (Year 2000)

These victims could be your co-workers, your friend, your neighbor, the lady sitting next to you on the train...any female. It is so alarming that many women are in denial and that many die at the hands of their abuser.

We have to help....and we could help by spreading the word and speaking out about this issue. By speaking out we are spreading awareness and giving a voice to those that are afraid. Please spread the word and share your survivor story even if anonymously. Some survivor stories are here.

If at this present moment someone who is reading this post is a victim please know that you are not alone and there is help. You are stronger than you know!

Below are some resources I found on-line that provide help for victims of domestic abuse and also list additional ways for us to help.
National Domestic Hotline
Safe Horizons
Domestic Violence Resource Center
